Deafway provides specialist residential services in Preston, Lancashire, for D/deaf adults with additional needs who cannot currently live fully independently.
We offer long-term, short-term and respite care for adults with needs including mental health challenges, learning disabilities, sight loss, personality disorders and behaviours that may challenge.
Our accommodation includes five modern, self-contained houses designed to feel homely while encouraging independence. The site is close to Preston city centre, local services and transport links, while also being surrounded by native woodland near the Ribble Valley.
Our support is delivered by a dedicated and highly trained team of both D/deaf and hearing staff.
Staff are either fluent in British Sign Language or working rapidly towards fluency. No new member of staff begins working at Deafway without first completing an introduction to BSL and a Deaf Awareness Course.
This is followed by BSL Level 1 and BSL Level 2 courses as part of their training package. Our staff also use a range of additional manual and visual communication methods to ensure each person receives support in the way that works best for them.
At Deafway, our respite services give both carers and the people they care for the opportunity to rest, recharge and enjoy time away from their usual routine.
Every person who stays with us receives a personalised care plan, tailored to their individual needs, preferences and communication style.
We offer a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, basic cookery, shopping trips, cinema nights and bingo evenings.
Stephen Bannister House opened in December 2012 and provides specialist accommodation for a small group of residents who require a higher level of staff support.
With a high staff-to-resident ratio, we are able to provide personalised development opportunities, behavioural support and a wide range of recreational, therapeutic and meaningful activities.
Our trained staff work closely with each resident to understand their individual needs and provide support that promotes safety, confidence and wellbeing.
